OUR 2009 SEASON

Masquers Playhouse proudly presents our 55th season:

A tour de force from the reigning master of British comedy, this remains a favorite work of the author himself. Based on a true incident from Ayckbourn’s own life, Absent Friends is a hilarious and touching close-up on marriage, love, the death of love... and death itself.

Musicals about relationships are nothing new, but this contemporary musical reinvents the familiar format and offers one of the brightest scores of the new century, chronicling a five-year marriage, from meeting to breakup... or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. Written by Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Songs for a New World), The Last Five Years is an intensely personal look at a relationship told from both points of view.

This Victorian romance sparkles with Wilde’s trademark comedy of manners, repartée, epigrams, and witty dialogue all the while tugging at our heartstrings. Lady Windermere, shattered by the suspicion of her husband’s infidelity, contemplates affairs of the heart as her rival illustrates the difference between true morality and its mere appearance. A classic masterpiece, studded with humorous quips and clever paradoxes.

With Loot, a riotously absurd and anarchistic comedy, Joe Orton turned middle-class platitudes on their heads. In his short career from 1964 until his death in ‘67, this modern satirist shocked, outraged and entertained audiences with his scandalous black comedies. “Ortonesque” became a recognized term for the outrageously macabre.

A dark and stormy night. A flat tire. A spooky old castle. Then things go in a totally unexpected direction! This long-running British musical is a parody of old-fashioned science fiction and horror films. Come join us for an evening of PG-13 fun, ‘70s style, in this fabulous, campy romp, bursting at the seams with offbeat humor!
