Amahl is a disabled boy in ancient Judea who sees an amazing star "as big as a window" one night. Later that night, there is a knock at the door and his mother tells him to go see who it is. He is amazed when he sees three splendidly dressed kings, Magi bearing gifts, who ask to spend the night at the house.

Amahl and the King

Amahl's mother agrees to shelter the kings, who are on a long journey to bring gifts to a wondrous child. But she is tempted by those gifts, and a chance to save her own child from a life as a beggar.
