Little Mary Sunshine
Music and lyrics by Rick Besoyan
Directed by Robert Love
Musical direction by Pat King
Choreography by Kris Bell

The handsome hero is courageous, but his next in command is a coward. The heroine, adored by all, is unassailably virtuous, but her servant girl is libidinous. The ladies are pretty and charming, and the gentlemen are stouthearted and brave. The villain must, in the end, face utter defeat.

First billed in 1959 as “a new musical about an old operetta,” Little Mary Sunshine is a musical spoof of old time favorites like Rose Marie and Naughty Marietta.  With its deliberately corny songs and naive situations, it pokes fun at the over-earnest heroes and heroines, dastardly villains and coquettish soubrettes of a bygone era, but it is done freshly and with flair. There are 24 songs in all, including thundering choruses, schmaltzy waltzes and lilting duets — all kidding and all in good fun.
